Birds & Brass
- An ode to the landscape -
At the 30th of January 2016 250 musicians from nine Frisian brass bands gave a unique concert. Entitled Birds&Brass the brass bands played pieces on the subject of birds and landscape, ending with the composition ‘Reade Skries’ (bar-tailed godwit), written by Sytze Pruiksma, that was played all together.
This first Birds & Brass concert was the kick-off of a huge musical spectacle organized by King of the Meadows, that will take place in the summer of 2018, the year in which Leeuwarden (Fryslân) is the Cultural Capital of Europe. A concert with 2000 musicians, dance and video. Artistic director of the King of the Meadows, Sytze Pruiksma, wants to express his concern about the impoverishment of the landscape with a musical statement, with as many musicians from the brass world as possible, because that’s where you get to the capillaries of the Frisian culture.
In the meantime more Bird&Brass concerts have followed, building up to the final event in 2018. The second one took place at the 2nd of July 2016 with again 250 musicians from nine other Frisian brass bands. The third one with 350 musicians of 8 brass bands at 28th of January 2017 and more concerts coming up!
